Saudi’s AlUla Brings Runners to a Desert Marathon

July 1, 2025

The AlUla Desert Blaze is back for its third edition on 15 and 16 August this year. Around 500 runners from around the world are expected to join this endurance race, known for its intense desert conditions, according to a statement shared with Saudi Streets.

Taking place in AlUla, a city in Saudi Arabia, the race passes through rocky canyons, sand dunes, palm-filled valleys, and ancient sites. Participants can choose from four distances: 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, a half marathon (21.1 kilometers), or a full marathon (42.2 kilometers). It is also open to all levels, from seasoned runners to first-timers looking for a new challenge.

Races start at Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The full marathon route also includes Maraya, a large mirrored building that reflects AlUla’s modern side.

The event will provide race kits, water, and refreshment stations, as well as a celebration at the finish line. Desert Blaze is part of the AlUla Moments calendar, which hosts events focused on sports, culture, and exploration throughout the year.

In 2025, Saudi Arabia is expanding its tourism sector as part of its Vision 2030 goals. To make travel easier, Saudi Arabia has introduced e-visas for over 60 countries and a stopover visa for short visits. New airlines like Riyadh Air and expanded airports aim to improve access and support growing tourist numbers.

The country aims to welcome 70 million international tourists by 2030 and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the tourism industry.
