Saudi Arabia’s aviation landscape is about to get a bold new player, as Riyadh Air, the Kingdom’s latest national carrier, gears up to officially take flight by the end of 2025. The announcement, made by CEO Tony Douglas in late February, marks a major milestone in Saudi Arabia’s ambitious push to transform its aviation sector and broaden its economic horizons under Vision 2030.
First unveiled in March 2023 under the guidance of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Riyadh Air is fully owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) – the state’s powerful investment arm driving the Kingdom’s diversification efforts. Positioned as a premium airline, Riyadh Air aims to redefine modern air travel, offering a blend of advanced technology, sustainability, and elevated passenger experiences.
Here is what you need to know about Riyadh Air.
Led by Industry Veteran
At the helm is Tony Douglas, a veteran with over 40 years of experience across aviation, transport, and logistics.
Previously the CEO of Etihad Airways, Douglas brings extensive regional and global expertise, making him a natural fit to lead Riyadh Air as it strives to become a world-class carrier.
Fleet Focus: Modern, Efficient, and Sustainable
Riyadh Air’s growing fleet is already shaping up to be one of the most advanced in the region, with the airline confirming an initial order of 39 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, plus options for 33 additional aircraft. These jets – known for their larger windows, quieter cabins, and 25 percent lower fuel consumption than similar aircraft – align with the airline’s focus on passenger comfort and environmental responsibility.
The airline has also set its sights on 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft, which offer a 50 percent smaller noise footprint and 20 percent lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, further cementing Riyadh Air’s sustainability credentials.
A Premium Experience for Every Passenger
With premium travellers in mind, Riyadh Air promises to raise the bar with private sliding doors in business class and spacious premium economy seating, designed to deliver business-class-like comfort, though without fully lie-flat seats.
Even in economy, passengers can expect a step above the usual, with 13.3-inch personal screens and USB-C charging ports at every seat.
However, like all airlines based in the Kingdom, Riyadh Air will follow Saudi laws prohibiting alcohol, but passengers can look forward to an impressive selection of creative mocktails designed to elevate the in-flight experience.
Global Ambitions: 100 Destinations by 2030
Although the full route map hasn’t been revealed yet, Riyadh Air has set a bold target – serving 100 destinations by 2030. Initial flights are expected to connect Riyadh to major European capitals, with CEO Tony Douglas publicly expressing a strong interest in securing slots in London.
The airline’s expansion strategy also includes regional routes within the Middle East, along with key destinations across Asia and Africa. With partnerships already in place with global players like Singapore Airlines, Air China, and Delta, Riyadh Air is also positioning itself to tap into the lucrative North American market.
A Home Base Fit for the Future
Riyadh Air will operate from the upcoming King Salman International Airport, which is set to become the world’s largest airport once completed in 2030 and is being designed by British architectural firm Foster + Partners.
This ultra-modern hub will offer state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring seamless connections for Riyadh Air passengers and a premium travel experience from the moment they arrive.
Loyalty and Lounge Perks in the Pipeline
While full details of Riyadh Air’s loyalty program are still under wraps, Douglas has confirmed that a frequent flyer program is a given. Passengers can expect a system where they can earn and spend miles, with personalized offers based on past preferences.
Frequent flyers with elite status will also enjoy access to premium lounges, including a sleek new business lounge at King Khalid International Airport, along with those offered by Riyadh Air’s partner airlines. The airline is even considering status match promotions, giving high-tier members from other carriers the chance to switch their loyalty to Riyadh Air.
Saudi Style in the Skies
Riyadh Air isn’t just about luxury cabins and cutting-edge aircraft – even the crew uniforms are making headlines. Designed by renowned Saudi designer Mohammed Ashi, founder of Ashi Studio, the uniforms – which include elegant coats, tailored trousers, flowing dresses, and chic hats – were unveiled at Paris Haute Couture Week, instantly setting a new benchmark for in-flight fashion.
A Vision Aligned with the Future
Riyadh Air’s upcoming launch is more than just the debut of another airline – it’s a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s broader transformation, demonstrating the Kingdom’s commitment to building world-class industries, expanding tourism, and connecting Saudi Arabia to the world.
With its cutting-edge fleet, premium service focus, and strategic global partnerships, Riyadh Air is poised to become a key player in the future of global aviation – all while representing the spirit, culture, and ambition of modern Saudi Arabia.
