Saudi Arabia is set to introduce Dream of the Desert, the Middle East’s first five-star luxury train, which will launch in late 2026.

The project is part of the Kingdom’s broader effort to position itself as a destination for high-end tourism, in alignment with the Saudi Vision 2030.

The project is a partnership between Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and the Italian luxury hospitality brand Arsenale, blending advanced technology with cultural authenticity to offer a unique travel experience across the Arabian Peninsula.

A Journey Through Saudi Arabia’s Heritage

Designed by Lebanese architect Aline Asmar d’Amman, acclaimed for her work on major hospitality projects such as the Hotel de Crillon in Paris and the soon-to-be-opened Orient-Express Hotel in Venice, the Dream of the Desert train aims to set a new standard in luxury travel, serving as a mobile five-star hotel rather than merely a mode of transportation.

With a budget of SAR 200 million (USD 53.33 million), the project strives to transform rail travel in the region, with interiors that seamlessly combine modern sophistication with traditional Saudi design elements.

Drawing inspiration from the expansive desert and iconic landmarks in Saudi Arabia, such as Madain Saleh, meaning ‘the cities of Salih,’ an archaeological site located in the area of AlUla governorate, the train’s design incorporates earthy tones, intricate woodwork, plush textiles, and geometric patterns.

The train includes 14 carriages, featuring 34 luxurious suites that accommodate up to 82 passengers per journey, and reception lounges with gold-accented ceilings, velvet banquettes, and tile-fronted bars, adding to the experience.

Departing from Riyadh and heading north to Al Qurayyat, near the Jordanian border, the train ride covers a 1,300-kilometer route. The journey also includes stops at notable destinations such as Al Qassim, Hail, and Al Jouf, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage, including UNESCO World Heritage sites like Hegra and areas adjacent to the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Nature Reserve.

The journey, which spans one to two days, is designed to immerse travelers in Saudi Arabia’s traditions and history, complemented by high-end amenities. Cultural programs, created in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, will enrich the experience by highlighting regional customs and artistic heritage.

Strategic Significance

The Dream of the Desert, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, is part of an ambitious plan to diversify the Kingdom’s economy by promoting tourism and cultural initiatives.

Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), emphasized that this project represents a commitment to developing world-class infrastructure while elevating both transport and tourism sectors.

“The train combines luxury, innovation, and cultural authenticity, setting a new standard in rail travel,” he said, noting that the project reflects the country’s commitment to providing unmatched travel experiences.

As travelers eagerly await its 2026 debut, reservations are expected to open later this year, offering exclusive packages for discerning travelers seeking adventure blended with luxury.
