North Riyadh Geopark Receives UNESCO Recognition

May 6, 2025

A delegation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), led by Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences Lidia Brito, visited North Riyadh Geopark this week to mark its official inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, a first for Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.

Accompanied by the Director of the Saudi Geopark Initiative Hussam Al-Turki and a group of local experts, the delegation toured the site’s standout geological landmarks, including Abu Shaddad Cave and the “Edge of the World” escarpment, known for its striking rock formations and sweeping desert views.

These features are part of a vast geological landscape that offers insight into ancient Earth processes, supporting Saudi Arabia’s broader goals of promoting ecotourism and environmental education.

Brito described the designation as a “remarkable achievement” that highlights the Kingdom’s rich geological and cultural heritage. The visit concluded with a community-focused session in Ghamrah Village, showcasing both the local landscape and traditions.

The visit follows UNESCO’s announcement in April 2025 of 16 new additions to its Global Geoparks Network, including North Riyadh and Salma Geoparks.

The recognition brings the total number of geoparks worldwide to 229 across 50 countries. Saudi Arabia has set its sights on developing up to 13 sites under the program, with efforts led by the National Center for Vegetation Cover to protect biodiversity, preserve geoheritage, and encourage sustainable tourism.
