The Eastern Province Municipality has launched an initiative to document and digitize trees across Alkhobar on Monday 11 August, with the goal of transforming the city into the Kingdom’s first smart green city.
In its initial phase, the project will involve the recording and digital tagging of over 100,000 trees.
This effort is designed to bolster Alkhobar’s global standing, particularly as the city currently ranks 61st in the 2025 Smart Cities Index.
Officials emphasize that the project reflects a strong commitment to environmental sustainability while simultaneously creating economic opportunities by encouraging private sector participation in tree-planting campaigns.
Each tree will be equipped with an electronic tag that provides detailed information—such as its species, location, and care guidelines—in both Arabic and English.
These tags will be geo-linked, contributing to a comprehensive database that maps Alkhobar’s green assets and promotes investment in smart city infrastructure.
To date, more than 10,000 trees have been documented in key areas such as the Southern Corniche and waterfront.
As the initiative expands, it aims to cover all trees throughout the city, setting a precedent for environmental innovation in the region.
This project aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions and enhance biodiversity, while also contributing to the Kingdom’s broader vision of developing smart cities powered by renewable energy.
