King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has introduced a new breast cancer diagnostic technique that allows patients to undergo biopsy and imaging in a single visit, reducing delays in diagnosis and treatment.
In a press release sent to Saudi Streets, the hospital explained that its implementation of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) as a guiding tool for biopsy represents a significant shift in the early detection and diagnosis of breast tumors, particularly those that are difficult to detect using conventional imaging techniques.
This new approach allows physicians to pinpoint and collect tissue samples immediately during the CEM procedure. Previously, patients were often required to schedule an additional MRI-guided biopsy following initial imaging results. That process led to extended wait times, increased stress for patients, and greater healthcare costs. The new method streamlines the diagnostic journey, providing more timely results and enabling faster treatment planning.
CEM works by using a contrast agent to highlight abnormalities that might not be visible through traditional mammography or ultrasound, making it especially valuable in detecting early-stage cancers or tumors in patients with dense breast tissue.
KFSHRC first introduced contrast-enhanced mammography nearly a decade ago, becoming a pioneer in the field within Saudi Arabia. Today, it is one of the few hospitals in the Middle East offering this technique as part of its routine breast cancer diagnostics. By incorporating the latest advancements into standard practice, the hospital continues to reinforce its position as a regional leader in cancer care and diagnostics.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Saudi Arabia and around the world. According to the Saudi Cancer Registry, thousands of women in the Kingdom are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. Early detection remains the most effective way to improve survival rates and reduce the severity of treatment.
KFSHRC’s advancement comes as part of a broader commitment to innovation in healthcare. In 2024, the hospital was ranked the number one academic medical center in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally, according to Brand Finance. It was also recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the wider region. Additionally, KFSHRC earned spots on both the World’s Best Hospitals and World’s Best Smart Hospitals lists compiled by Newsweek magazine.
This latest development further demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s investment in improving cancer care and enhancing patient outcomes through cutting-edge medical technologies.
