Viral Act of Courage Leads Nepali Mosque Defender to Makkah for Umrah

August 17, 2026

A Nepali Muslim man who went viral after defending a mosque from attackers has been brought to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, sponsored by Saudi donors in appreciation of his courage.

Sheikh Rahemullah, 32, from Rampur in Nepal, was seen in a widely circulated video in late January confronting a crowd attempting to attack a mosque in Nepal’s Rautahat district.

Despite having lost one leg and using a crutch, Rahemullah was seen holding a stick as he stood in front of the mosque and confronted the attackers. The footage quickly spread across social media, prompting Saudi activists to launch a campaign to identify the man behind the viral video.

Their efforts eventually led to Rahemullah being invited to the Kingdom with his parents. The family arrived in Saudi Arabia on 5 August to perform Umrah in Makkah.

During their stay, Rahemullah and his parents were welcomed by Saudis and residents of Makkah, who received them with gifts and gestures of hospitality. The support also extended beyond the pilgrimage. Bader Association has undertaken to provide Rahemullah with a prosthetic limb following the loss of his leg.

Mohammed Rafi, a Muslim content creator from Kerala, India, met Rahemullah and his family and accompanied them during their stay in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to Arab News, Rafi said Rahemullah was deeply happy with the opportunity to perform Umrah and grateful for the hospitality shown to him and his family in Makkah and Madinah.

Rahemullah and his parents left Saudi Arabia for Nepal on 14 August, carrying memories of their time in Makkah and Madinah and gratitude to those who helped make the journey possible.
