Etihad Airways will launch direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Airport starting Sunday, 4 October, according to a statement by Red Sea Global (RSG) published on Tuesday, 8 September.
The airline will operate one weekly flight on Sundays at first, increasing to two flights per week on Thursdays and Sundays starting from 25 October.
The new route will connect Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi with Red Sea International Airport, located on Saudi Arabia’s northwestern coast, in a flight lasting around three hours.
The inaugural service is expected to expand access to The Red Sea, a luxury tourism destination developed by RSG featuring beaches, islands, desert landscapes, and resort properties.
RSG Group CEO John Pagano said that “The partnership with Etihad would improve international connectivity to the destination as the company continues to expand its portfolio of resorts and experiences.”
Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves said, “The new service would make the destination accessible through a direct flight from Abu Dhabi and via a single connection from other cities across the airline’s network.”
The General Authority of Civil Aviation, Saudi Air Connectivity Program, and daa International, the operator of Red Sea International Airport, were involved in establishing the new service.
The Red Sea currently has 11 operating resorts, including Six Senses Southern Dunes, Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and Four Seasons Resort and Residences. Another six resorts are expected to open in the coming months.
Red Sea International Airport currently receives around 20 domestic and international flights each week from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Doha, and Milan.
Red Sea International Airport is being developed as the main gateway to The Red Sea destination, which is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider efforts to expand luxury tourism along its northwestern coast.
